If Joseph Smith really was pretending to not know Jerusalem had walls around it, then how did he know Jerusalem’s relative elevation and the region’s topography?

There appears to be a contradiction between Joseph Smith not knowing that Jerusalem had walls around it, and him knowing that Jerusalem was higher up than the surrounding areas. 

The Book of Mormon consistently states that Lehi and his family travelled “down” from Jerusalem and “up” to it. 

How would Joseph Smith know about this but not know that it had walls?
