Where would Joseph Smith have gotten the idea of shining stones?

In Ether 3:4, the Brother of Jared asks the Lord to touch the 16 stones to give light:

And I know, O Lord, that thou hast all power, and can do whatsoever thou wilt for the benefit of man; therefore touch these stones, O Lord, with thy finger, and prepare them that they may shine forth in darkness; and they shall shine forth unto us in the vessels which we have prepared, that we may have light while we shall cross the sea.

In the narrative it is the Brother of Jared who comes up with the idea of shining stones as a source of light. What are the odds that Jewish traditions also speak of Noah having shining stones in the Ark to give light?

Is the connection between Noah and the Brother of Jared both using shining stones just a coincidence?
